Oppenheimer Leads BAFTA Nominations, But Snubs and Surprises Abound

The nominations for the 77th EE British Academy Film Awards were announced on Thursday, January 18th, at 12 p.m. local time in London. The ceremony will be held on February 18th at the Royal Festival Hall.

Oppenheimer Dominates with 13 Nominations

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer led the nominations with 13, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things with 11. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest both earned nine nods.

However, the nominations were not without their surprises. Some notable snubs included Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), who won a Golden Globe for her performance, and Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, and Yorgos Lanthimos in the Best Director category.

BAFTA Nominations Embrace Diversity and British Talent

Killers of the Flower Moon still scored an impressive nine nominations, but Leonardo DiCaprio did not make the cut. Barbie also fared less well than expected, with only five nominations after garnering nine Golden Globe nominations and winning two.

The BAFTA nominations have been criticized in recent years for being too similar to the Oscars and not recognizing enough British films. However, this year’s list seems to be more diverse, with two of the six Best Director nominees being British and films like All of Us Strangers and Rye Lane receiving nominations.

Scott’s Surprising Absence

One of the biggest surprises was the omission of Yorgos Lanthimos from the Best Director category for Poor Things, despite the film’s critical acclaim. Andrew Scott’s absence from the Best Actor category for All of Us Strangers was also puzzling.

On the other hand, there were some pleasant surprises, such as Justine Triet’s French-language hit Anatomy of a Fall receiving seven nominations, including Best Film, Director, and Actress.

Anatomy of a fall

International Impact

The film’s UK release was handled by Lionsgate after initially being acquired by Picturehouse. The film, which has been on a mission since its Cannes Palme d’Or win last May, continues the recent trend of foreign-language movies punching across major categories at the BAFTAs and Oscars.

Other notable surprises included German actress Sandra Hüller getting nominations in both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, and the inclusion of the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol in the Best Film Not in the English Language category.

Overall, the 2024 BAFTA nominations were a mixed bag, with some predictable choices and some major surprises. It will be interesting to see who takes home the awards on February 18th.
