In a decisive move, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday declared the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) as an “unlawful association” under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for a period of five years. This significant development underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to thwarting any activities deemed detrimental to the unity, sovereignty, and integrity of the nation.
Masarat Alam, who has been in detention in Jammu and Kashmir for the past two decades, with intermittent periods of release, has been a prominent figure in the separatist landscape. Appointed as the chief of the Hurriyat Conference following the demise of Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani in 2021, Alam’s association with anti-national and secessionist activities has drawn the government’s attention.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing the government’s stance, asserted that the organization and its members were actively involved in activities contrary to national interests. The official statement posted on social media emphasized that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is resolute in ensuring that those acting against the unity, sovereignty, and integrity of the nation would face the full force of the law.
The MHA’s notification highlighted that the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) was known for its anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda. The organization’s objectives were outlined as seeking the freedom of Jammu and Kashmir from India, advocating for the region’s merger with Pakistan, and striving to establish Islamic rule. The government’s decision to invoke the UAPA against the outfit for a five-year period is indicative of its commitment to curbing activities that pose a threat to national security.
The Ministry pointed out that the organization had been actively involved in fundraising through various channels, including support from Pakistan and its proxy organizations. The funds raised were allegedly utilized for unlawful activities, including supporting terrorism. The sustained incidents of stone-pelting on security forces were cited as acts of sheer disrespect towards the constitutional authority and the established constitutional framework of the country.
Furthermore, the Home Ministry contended that there were substantial inputs indicating linkages between the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) and banned terrorist organizations. Members of the organization were alleged to have actively supported terrorist activities, with the intent to create a reign of terror in the country. The government, based on these inputs, was of the opinion that immediate action was necessary to curb the unlawful activities of the outfit.
The Central government’s notification highlighted its concern that if prompt measures were not taken to control the activities of the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction), the organization would exploit the opportunity to persist in anti-national activities. The stated objectives included advocating for the secession of Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India, disputing its accession to the Union, and propagating false narratives and anti-national sentiments to incite disaffection against India and disrupt public order in the region.
The decision to declare the organization an unlawful association under Section 3 (3) of the UAPA for a period of five years is a strong assertion of the government’s determination to tackle forces that threaten the territorial integrity, security, and sovereignty of the country.
