Flight of Over 300 Indians Grounded in Paris Amid Human Trafficking Suspicion

Over 300 Indian nationals find themselves stranded at Vatry airport near Paris following the grounding of their plane due to suspicions of human trafficking. The Indian Embassy in France is actively collaborating with French authorities to swiftly resolve the situation. However, a judge is set to hear the case soon, with the power to potentially extend the detention of the Indians for up to eight days.

The predicament unfolded after a Nicaragua-bound Airbus A340 was halted at Vatry airport on Friday, prompted by intelligence suggesting that the passengers on board were potential victims of human trafficking. According to French regulations, border police can detain foreign nationals for up to four days, with the possibility of extending this period to a maximum of 26 days through a judge’s order.

Human Trafficking

In response to the challenging circumstances, at least 11 stranded Indian passengers at Vatry airport have reportedly sought asylum in France, including six minors. François Procureur, a lawyer and president of Chalons-en-Champagne, emphasized the urgency of processing their requests within the 96-hour timeframe, after which the judge of freedoms and detention must intervene.

The Indian Embassy in France is actively involved in high-level discussions with French authorities to expedite the resolution of the situation. Consular access has been provided to all 303 stranded Indians, ensuring their welfare. Emergency services have arranged provisional sleeping accommodations for the affected individuals, along with restroom and shower facilities, meals, and warm beverages.

Amidst these developments, the Romanian company Legend Airlines, responsible for the grounded plane, vehemently denied any wrongdoing and involvement in ‘alleged’ Human Trafficking. The airline stated that the aircraft was chartered by a “trusted client.” The crew members were questioned by French authorities and subsequently released without being taken into custody.

The unfolding events at Vatry airport underscore the complex challenges associated with international travel, immigration regulations, and the ongoing fight against human trafficking. The collaborative efforts between Indian and French authorities will be crucial in ensuring the well-being of the stranded individuals and addressing the legal complexities surrounding the case.
