In a recent announcement, the Pakistani government has extended the deadline for submitting Hajj applications by an additional 10 days, now set until December 22. The decision follows the expiration of the previous deadline on Tuesday, as reported by The News International.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, officials revealed the lifting of the five-year ban on Haj-e-Badal, allowing individuals to perform the pilgrimage on behalf of another. This policy shift coincides with efforts to bolster foreign reserves, with the government introducing a novel incentive: those settling their dues in dollars from overseas will be automatically declared as “winners” without the need for a traditional ballot.
Emphasizing a “first come first served” approach, the ministry is now accepting Hajj applications under the sponsorship scheme. Notably, individuals who have undertaken the pilgrimage in the last five years are eligible to apply for Hajj 2024.
Key Reforms for 2024 Hajj Pilgrimage
The government’s commitment to making the pilgrimage more accessible is evident in its decision to reduce Hajj expenses by Rs 100,000 PKR. Consequently, the total cost for next year’s pilgrimage is set at Rs 1,075,000 PKR, benefiting approximately 89,605 Pakistanis participating in the government scheme. Pilgrims can opt for either long-term packages spanning 38 to 42 days or shorter-term options ranging from 20 to 25 days.
In a historic development, women now have the unprecedented opportunity to undertake the sacred journey without the traditional requirement of a male companion. This move is expected to enhance inclusivity and empower female pilgrims.

To further facilitate the pilgrimage experience, the government will provide free-of-cost mobile SIMs with roaming internet packages to all Pakistani pilgrims. The News International has reported that Pakistan has secured a total of 179,000 Hajj seats, with half reserved for private Hajj operators.
The extended application deadline, policy changes, and cost reductions mark significant steps by the Pakistani government to streamline and enhance the Hajj experience for its citizens. As the nation prepares for the 2024 pilgrimage, these reforms are poised to make the sacred journey more accessible and inclusive for all.
